Help the needy in your midst 恵まれない人々を助ける

Another heroic tendency we would like to see developed among you of all lands is the desire to help the needy in your midst.  Even though you feel your society is generous—and in a way that is quite true—still, for many people there is an aversion to others who are retarded or disabled, those who are poor, dishevelled or unwashed.  There still exists a deep suspicion about human misfortune.  ...  But if you feel too smug in your affluence or your comfort, be aware that you just might lose all you have materially in order to bring home that you are not better than others. If you have gifts, be grateful for them; don't presume superiority over others.  Don’t be suspicious of people with less material wealth than you, thinking that they must envy you.  Instead, be prepared to lose all you have and still feel happy in your heart.  Then you can enjoy your neighbors and be glad to help the less fortunate.  This is a very great lesson and a hard one.  If you dwell on your relation to our world—the world of spirit—then it will become easier and more natural to develop these more positive attitudes.

もう一つの利他的な傾向で私たちが世界中の人々に伸ばしてもらいたいと思っているものは，あなたがたの中にいる困窮した人々を助けたいと思う気持ちである。みなさんは，みなさんの社会は寛大で気前が良いとー確かにある意味では，そうだが―感じているにも関わらず，まだ多くの人々には，心身のハンディキャップを持つ人々，貧しい人々，身なりの悪い人々や不潔な人々に対する嫌悪感がある。人間の不幸について深い猜疑心がまだ存在しているのだ。（中略）しかし，もし，自分たちの豊かさや快適さにあまりにも自己満足を覚えるようであれば，あなたがたは他の人々より優れているわけではないとはっきり悟るために，物質的な所有物をすべて失うかもしれないと思いなさい。もし，多くの点で恵まれているなら，感謝しなさい。他の人々より自分が優越していると思ってはいけない。自分より物質的に豊かでない人々を，自分たちを妬んでいるに違いないと考え，疑ってはならない。それよりも，持てる全てを失っても幸せな気持ちでいられるように備えなさい。これは，非常に大きな学びで，しかも，困難なレッスンなのだ。あなたがたと私たちの世界―霊界―との関係についてじっくり考えるなら，こうしたより前向きな態度を培うことはより容易く，またより自然なものになるだろう。
